Heredia City Tour

Today after class, half of us got on a city bus to head to "el mercado central de Heredia". Once we were there, my partner and I were given 1000 colones (about $2) to find the fruit that we were assigned to. We were also to explore the old market, which is more wholesale fruit, meat, seafood, and other items, as opposed to the new market, which is what I saw as something more similar to a strip mall. One of the SOL leaders gathered our purchases, and we walked through the Central Park of Heredia, which is one of four parks in the city. We walked through one of the oldest churches, and also by the house of the man who the city is named after. Heredia's nickname is the City of Flowers, which is "flores" in spanish. This man was one of the richest people when the city was established, and he had many daughters. When there were men looking to marry, they would go to see these girls in the "ciudad de flores".

We had a few minutes to explore the park a little more, and then we met up at a little corner cafe where we had smoothies or iced coffee, and also got to taste the fruit that we had purchased earlier. Some of these have English names, and others do not. We got to try some new pastries as well. It was nice to get to try some of the fruit so that I'm not nervous for it later in the semester!
