First Night Going Out
This Friday kicks off what is our first free weekend in Costa Rica. There are a bunch of SOLmates going to Jacó Beach, but I'm ready for some time to explore a little more in Heredia. After class, we send out an open invitation to come out to some local bars with some Ticos that are willing to show us around.
Around 7:30, we have finished dinner and got ready to go out. In general, Ticos dress up more than we normally would in the states, so I throw on a dress and put on some makeup for the first time in about 3 weeks. Mama Tica tells us to have fun and be careful, and we are headed to meet with our group of about 10 SOLmates and 3 Ticos.
There are quite a few in our group that haven't gone out before, because they're under 21. The legal drinking age in Costa Rica is 18, and they get excited when they're not carded at the entrance of the first bar we get to. Because I'm finishing up my antibiotics, I'm not drinking alcohol tonight, but according to most of our group, Imperial, the beer that is made in Costa Rica is worth a try. It is also one of the cheaper options, as most things that are imported are more expensive.
We end up stopping at a local club, where there are bouncers that check our IDs to get in. It's so busy that we only stop for the bathroom before heading out to find a less-crowded place. It doesn't take us long because we have some Ticos with us, but by the time that we get to the third bar, it's about 10:15, and I'm exhausted. It's really loud where we are, and I rely on texting Hannah to talk to her, even though she's 4 feet from me. We play a few card games, and some of the Ticos show us how to dance, but I'm ready to go home. Hannah and I quickly find a taxi to take us home, and we turn in for the night.
I know that the bar scene really isn't my thing, but I'm happy to spend some time with my SOLmates and local Ticos to get to know them a little more.
