Animal Shelter, Part 2
After rearranging our semester calendar a little bit, our volunteer group decided to go back to the animal shelter today instead of Wednesday. It made it easier to finish up final projects and study for the final exams of Module 1.
When we got to San Rafael, Hannah and I had expected that the dogs that we had spent time with before would be there for us to walk and play with again. Much to our surprise, all but only one of the dogs that were there last week were there again, including all 10 of the puppies! We wish we had that kind of turnaround in the US!
Today I walked with an older dog named Viki. Normally the dogs don't have names, so I was surprised when she responded to one. From the injuries on her back right leg, I inferred that she was in a fight pretty recently. The thought was confirmed for me when she quickly became skittish around other dogs that were being walked at the same time. Otherwise a very calm and sweet dog, my heart broke a little as I spent time with her.
Based on my experience with the dogs so far, I know I'm going to have to fight the urge to adopt several when I get home.
