National Theatre
Today we left class a little early to go to a noon performance at the National Theatre in San José. Normally the tickets are about $15 each, but we were able to go for a much lower rate. The building is beautiful. One of the paintings on the ceiling of the entrance used to be on the bill for 5 thousand colones (about $10). My friend Shannon and I explored a little bit before the performance. We checked out the boxed-seating areas above where we were sitting in the audience, and a room that must have been for really special events (it was mostly roped off).
The show that we saw was about the Mayan version of how the sun was born. It was a 45-minute performance, and there were no words, with the exeption of a short introduction to the work. The acting was mostly dancing to the music that was played, and the whole stage was black-lit. The costumes were mostly black, with the exception of masks and some other items that were colors that would glow in the light.
I really liked the show; I had never seen anything like it before. Some of the other SOLmates and I decided to try and find some other shows that we could see in the future.
