Weekend in Nicaragua, Part 4
Today was our last day in Nicaragua. We had a free morning, and then all met up at a museum of chocolate, where there was a buffet. And you could put chocolate on almost everything. Like pancakes, crepes, and even gallo pinto (if you wanted, I'm sure they wouldn't mind, but ick).
After that, we started the trek back to Costa Rica. One thing that strikes me every time I think about is something our director said. "We'll need to be as patient and coopertive as we can with the border officers. It all depends on how they're feeling today." It didn't even occur to me that they could stall us there longer if they felt "in the mood" to do so. This time at the border, we didn't wait too long on the bus, and they didn't make us get off.
On the Costa Rica side, we were pleasantly surprised when we found that the majority of the Cubans had left since we were there three days prior. We gave them the supplies that we had purchased for them, and some students said a short prayer for them, and we were on our way again. We would learn later that their leader, Hennie, would leave the next morning for Texas.
If (when) I ever come back to Central America, I definitely want to see Nicaragua again. It is such a beautiful country; my pictures don't do it nearly enough justice. Just thinking about it and the people that we met there fills my heart with a melancholy feeling. I never feel like I can do enough to help this impoverished country. I'm going to go ahead and think about this for a while. I'll come up with something.
