Duolingo
We watch a lot of documentaries in class. Documentaries that are in Spanish, and generally about things that I know already. Today in class we watched one about evolution (Darwinism, creationism, etc.). I got distracted from the movie when I quick did a search on a popular language app, Duolingo. It was rated pretty well in the App Store, as well as some random reviews that popped up with my Google search. Naturally my attention was diverted from class material to downloading the app.
I decided (foolishly) that I didn't want to continue working on Spanish, but to turn my attention to French. That way, I could just start from the first levels instead of taking a placement test while still in my Civilization and Culture class. Looking back at this, French was a bad choice. I've been working on it since I downloaded the app, and I don't like itt very much at all. It could be the way that the app is set up. It just kid of dives into vocabulary, but I prefer to know the rules of what I'm trying to conjugate. And the rules of femininity and masculinity. And even what an infinitive verb is. At this point, it would be silly to deny my love of grammar.
I have since added Spanish onto my 'courses' list of Duolingo, and it was definitely a good idea. I can brush up on terms that I don't use very often, and keep learning new vocabulary. My timing was probably a little unorthodox, but I would recommend this app to supplement a language of which you already have foundational knowledge.
