Museo de Cultura Popular Costarricense
It is already time to head to our second museum! This one is in the province of Heredia, but it's a little farther of a walk than the Jade museum. It's called the Museum of Costa Ricas Popular Culture. I didn't know what this meant, but I found out that it's not pop culture in the sense of celebrities and tv shows.
This museum was actually the country house of a former president of Costa Rica, of which the property had been slightly altered to be a museum of traditional dance and food. We walked around the garden and got to see, touch, and smell some of the plants that were grown for medicinal purposes. We got to see the stone oven that the family actually used when they were there. Since the house was under repair, we mostly got to walk around the outside and see its structure from there.
We got to end the class by making a traditional dessert (the name escapes me right now) that is most comparable to a huge, unshaped rosette, but covered with a kind of sweet syrup. I was volunteered to mix the dough by hand, and it was hard work! It's a good thing that I actually really like these treats.
