Traditional Costa Rican Dance Class
Today after class we went to a nearby gymnasium to watch and learn some traditional dances of Costa Rica. The ladies that performed and also taught us were great! They wore beautiful white dresses with colorful accents of sashes ans flowers in their neatly pinned hair. They have a set routine of 8 or 9 songs that they bust out for festivals and celebrations around the country. In the group is a wide range of ages, the youngest being about 40, and the oldest could be in her late 50s or early 60s.
When it was our turn to join them, we were donned with full practice skirts and flower pins for our hair. The two guys that were with us carried some handkerchiefs and wore traditional-looking hats. We took an hour to learn 2 different dances, and we did them several times. I definitely liked this style better than any cumbia that would come up in a discoteca. We don't have to do these dances any more after today, but I hope that I can either continue learning the steps or show someone back home what we did. I'll have to ask for the tracks that we used today!
